More Favorite Songs

  • This is probably the most familiar Loscil song I have. I think I'd like to mix and rework Customer's "Tea House Part 1" to sound something like this. Maybe I could create several related parts to sound like or reflect the ideas in all the other Loscil songs posted here. It's an interesting idea.

I really love the sliding bass line and 4 bar kick paired together. There's so much action in this song but I'd still classify it as ambient. It feels like winter, snowfall, middle of the day, bright sun through bare branches, a lodge in the woods overlooking a not-yet-frozen stream making its way down a hill, working back and forth. I think this is the perfect song to be buried in a snow drift to.

I'm finding that writing about these songs really cements them in my mind and gives them a sense of reality and physical being that they don't have intrinsically. It's not just that they are, as it so happens, purely digital. Even songs on my cds are - if I don't take the time to sit down and devote myself to listening to them, if I don't purposefully choose them out of the tens of thousands of other songs - unreal in a certain sense.

I like making these songs real - anchoring them down in my reality and in my life - so that maybe when I return to them, in the near or, more likely, distant future, they will have been given by my subconscious a significance and meaning that isn't quite nostalgia and isn't quite remembrance.

    Loscil - Hydrogen

  • This is my second blog post here. It looks as though there will be many more. I'm not yet certain if I will share this blog with anyone else or keep it as a personal reference, in the vein of a private-through-obscurity digital diary. If you are reading this now, and you are not me, it is because you are reading it as someone who I do not know or as someone who I do know and have allowed to read it in the future.
